If you are at Musselburgh, you should find time to play Monktonhall.
This pretty but demanding parkland course nestles in a loop formed by the River Esk, overlooked
by the historic village of Inveresk and its hill-top church.
Originally a municipal and designed by James Braid in 1938, it is now a private club but
one which welcomes midweek visitors. It’s a big course (6,725 yards, par 71, SSS 73), with not
a weak hole.
Set in an expansive 145 acres, it has generous, tree-lined fairways, large, undulating greens,
multiple tees and is lavishly bunkered.
Because of the proximity of the river, the view from the elevated clubhouse is of a vast emerald
carpet surrounded by dense trees. Be warned: it plays long and the rough is fierce!
A warm welcome awaits in the Art Deco-style clubhouse where a pint and a good lunch will fuel
your attempt at revenge for the morning's indignities inflicted by one of the better inland courses
you'll play.
